Spain!

Spanien!
So I know some of you have been waiting for a post about Spain...and your in luck. I have nothing to do in English class today so I've got some time! At the moment I don't have many pictures, but I should be getting a flashdrive with photos from the whole trip from a friend soon.

Day 1.
My alarm goes off at the ungodly hour of 4am. I roll over, shut it off and resist the urge to hit the snooze button. I have to be on my way to the airport in half an hour. I'm going to Barcelona for 10 days with my class and I'm waiting for the excitement to do its job and wake me up. So far its not working. Like usual I end up running out the door at the last minute, purse slung over my shoulder, suitcase in one hand and in the other a roll hastily spread with nutella. Breakfast on the go. I get in the car and am soon speeding towards the airport. I was so tired at one point I thought I was dreaming. It isn't until takeoff that the excitement finally sets in. When we land we take a bus to the main portion of the airport where our host families are waiting to pic us up. Suddenly I'm nervous. It feels like the first day in Austria except worse because my Spanish is way worse than my German. Luckily this was an English project so the Catalan students were supposed to speak English with us anyway. I was to share a host family with Lara from my class. Our host sister's name was Paula. She was an average height with shoulder length brown hair that was held in a high ponytail. She greeted Lara and I with a friendly smile and showed us the way to her car. Her English was pretty good but her accent was so thick sometimes Lara had to translate what she said into German! Lara is much better at understanding accents than I am.
We were both exhausted but when we got home they were planning a big family lunch. We just had time to unpack our things, and walk with Paula to the grocery store before people started arriving. The first thing I noticed was how incredibly friendly and open everyone was. It was like were already a part of the family after only an hour! The second thing I noticed is that I was not in Spain. Let me explain. The region of Spain I was staying in is called Catalonia. This area has been trying to win their independence for awhile now and I was told four times in about 10 minutes that Catalonia is NOT Spain. The culture from what I know isn't hugely different but the language is definitely not the same. Catalan is a mixture of French, Italian, and Spanish. My hopes of evening understanding a few words were crushed. The third thing I noticed is how much people in Catalonia eat. I have never ever eaten so much food in my life as I did in those ten days,  and I'm an Engstrand so thats saying something! At the family lunch what I thought was the main dish was actually just the appetizer! And then right after I finished dessert I was asked if I would like to go out for ice cream! I opted out, and instead had a "siesta" which is the opposite of a "fiesta" basically a fancy word for a nap.
That night we had a welcome party at the kids school. They did the whole speech thing, then of course we ate. It was traditional Tappas. I had a close call with calamari. Being American I thought the calamari was onion rings. For those of you who don't know I'm allergic to squid. After taking a bite I realized what I rather than barfing my guts out later I quickly spit it out. My teacher was a little shocked, thought I was being rude, I explained I was allergic and she proceeded to tell my guest family. The next day when we went out for Tappas (again) for dinner they came over a limited the menu for me. Unfortunately they thought I was allergic to anything that came out of the ocean and although I tried to explain that I could eat fish they didn't get the message. After the dinner at the welcome party they did a typical Catalan dance. Its hard to explain, i'll post pictures as soon as I get them from a friend of mine.

Day 2.
Breakfast was cereal, chocolate granola, cocoa crispies, and chocolate croissants (see a pattern here?). They had warm milk and cold milk on the table. I had never eaten cereal with warm milk before, it was interesting. After I had poured myself a bowl of cereal I was asked if I wanted cocoa, I assumed to put in a glass of milk. I was wrong. I was offered cocoa to put on my already chocolate cereal. That was a lot of chocolate. After breakfast I was asked what I wanted for my SECOND breakfast. My first thought was "Hobbits" (for those of you who are not LOTR fans, hobbits eat a ton and always have second breakfasts). My second thought was, I think i'm going to like it here. And my third thought was, I might gain some weight.
We met up with the other kids at school and got on a bus to Barcelona. In Barcelona we walked along "la Rambla" a large shopping street near the coast. It was a beautiful day and Lili and I rented bikes. I have always wanted to bike around a European city, its just so picturesque! True to the stereotype I was at one point chased by some bike racers all yelling "rubia rubia!" (blondie, blondie). At first I was freaked out and started biking super fast....being racer bikers they caught up pretty easily but all they did was smile and wave as they road past. I really was pretty much the only blond in Barcelona.

Day 3
We went walked around the town of Manresa where my host family lives. All the girls got lunch at a restaurant where again I had a close call with squid. I didn't know they died noodles with squid ink....
It was St. Jordi's day which is similar to Valentines day. All the girls get roses and all the guys get a book...not sure why. It comes from the legend of St. George and the dragon. The whole street was lined with rose boothes and book sellers. It was like people had taken the town library, emptied it on the street and then some!

I got a rose from one of the boys in the Catalonian class. He didn't say two words to me the whole trip haha, but he gave me a rose! To bad he was so short ;)
After we got back from Manresa us girls did a bit of a photo shoot with our roses.

Day...?
One day we went to the beach. In the sun it was probably about 75 but the wind was SO COLD. We went swimming anyway. I actually stayed in the water for about half an hour, but I couldn't feel my entire body when I got out and I was completely red. And my towel and bag and ears and eyes and food and hair and everything was FULL of sand. To escape the wind I walked around with a good friend of mine Caro as well as two other girls Gloria and Kathi. It was an old seaside town, we got ice cream and wandered around laughing through the city streets.

(All of us crazy kids! Guess which ones are Austrian and which ones are Catalan...and then there is that one American)
We also visited a famous house that looks old but was actually built in the 1900s. It just has old style architecture.

These are my friends Lara and Lili (from left to right)

I'll write more later! I have to study for Physics

Happy Birthday.... to me!

Happy Birthday

Happy Birthday to me
I just turned 17
Its hard to believe
Cause I act like I'm 3!

Hope you all liked my original birthday song. I also hope you all sang it out loud when you read it, cause that was my goal! It has been awhile since I have posted. And that is a good thing! Been incredibly busy! But as my birthday rolled around, cards flowed in from all of my adoring and number one fans (Farmor and Grandma of course) and they expressed how much they enjoyed my blog, so here is my birthday gift to you!

On my birthday I woke up half an hour before my alarm clock with an incredible urge to pee. After dreaming of gleaming bathrooms and joyous chamber pots I finally could ignore it no longer and dragged myself out of bed to the bathroom. I then quietly slipped back into my room, desperate for just a few more minutes of sleep but to my utmost...joy? I was once again awoken, although this time by singing and gleaming candles. You know you live with two professional singers when Happy Birthday manages to stay in tune at 7am in the morning and ends in perfect harmony, not an easy feat. After such a performance I had no choice but to follow my host mom down the hall and into the living room where a new purse and delicious treats from the bakery were awaiting me. The lit cake and the sun streaming through the windows was beautiful, even through sleepy blurry eyes. I closed my eyes and thought of a wish, and in that moment I knew I must be 17. I opened my eyes and my wish was granted. "Go back to bed" said Elisabeth, "You can still sleep for fifteen more minutes."

On the way to school I opened Farmors card and then a little later Grandma's email. During the day I went shopping for Leif's birthday and a little for myself with my birthday money. The weather was beautiful. Sunny with a blue sky and nearly 70 degrees! In the evening I skyped with my parents and it rounded out to be a nearly perfect day.

2+2=4 Even in German

So I just want to say that I got a 2 on my math test the other day. Thats about the equivalent of a B-B+. I'm so proud! I'm not to good at math in English! And there were some word problems on this test. You know whats funny is when you have to study vocabulary for a math test...but hey it paid off!

Shrekpoint: #2! Rathaus!

Shrek got to accompany me to the Rathaus to go skating!
The lights at night were amazing!
He thought he was my prince
So I let him give me a kiss
But he didn't change
Stayed exactly the same
He might be green but he isn't a frog
So maybe thats why it went wrong
(I think I need to stop now)

Anyway, we had a great time. These are two other foreign exchange students that are also in Vienna. The girl on my left is Veronica from Venezuela, and the girl on my right is Perry from Hong Kong.
The ice rink was incredible. There is one big one right under the Rathaus, and then another one towards the front bordering the street. They are connected by winding loops and pathways of ice. Thats where we are in the photo. I loved it! We were there on the last day so unfortunately I don't get to go back....maybe next year?

Been Busy! Thats a good thing :)

A Ball!

So I believe it was two weekends ago that I attended a ball. It was at a casino in Baden. My host sister's cousin is graduating "high school" and its a tradition to hold a ball. Her, and I believe her entire class as well were in charge of hosting and organizing the event. The casino was a really old beautiful building, with red carpet stairs and a large ballroom. There was an actual opening ball ceremony were a bunch of young couples dance a choreographed waltz. All the girls wear white, and all the boys where a tux with a bow-tie. After they are done with their dance the rest of the guests are allowed to move on to the dance floor. Because I brought my friend Veronica (a foreign exchange student from Venezuela) I didn't have a dance partner. Elisabeth's date was kind enough to teach me the Foxtrot and Waltz, both which I picked up fairly easily. The problem was with all that turning my dress kept sliding over which made things a little awkward... Elisabeth's date's name was Tom. He was born in America but has lived in Austria since he was four. His hair is very long and to the ball he wore a traditional suit, it had ruffles! There was live music in the ballroom and a disco downstairs. The disco was more like the school dances I was used to except for the fact that there was a bar. Which isnt really strange, the strange part was I could order from it if I wanted. The disco was mostly full of teenagers but at one point during the night there was a couple of older ladies getting their funk on haha. Even though this was a "school ball" there were people of all ages. 10 to 80 really. It lasted from 9:00 until 3:00am and I didn't go to sleep until 5! New record for me. It was a lot of fun dancing all night long but my feet hurt like crazy the next day. The last dance was "Amadeus" and we were practically the only ones left in the ballroom. Elisabeth and I danced ridiculously crazy. It was great! All in all it was a great time! And I look forward to the next one in April!
This is Tim and Sophia :)
 Everyone I give you Elisabeth!
Tim, Sophia and Tom (see what I meant about the ruffles?)
Sophia with her two cousins, Mathias and Lena!
Me at the Disco with some random superhero who was flying around ;). Its one of those photo companies. You take a picture with the guy and then all of the pictures were being broadcasted on a t.v. upstairs outside the Ballroom.
 Me, taking a dance break.
 Me and Tom Waltzing!
That is a Coke. I swear.
 Elisabeth likes surprise photos.
Backrow: Tom, Tatjana (it was her ball) and Tim
Frontrow: Veronica, me and Sophia!

A Chef is Born

Breaking News!

- Signe, never before seen in the kitchen, has now revealed to have superb cooking skills

Hi, I am the reporter Einge Sngstrand. Yesterday I arrived in Mödling Austria, to get an exclusive interview with Signe on her sudden change of heart when it came to cooking.
Q: So Signe, I here from your family that prior to leaving the country, you were scarcely seen in the kitchen? The truth or are the exaggerating?
A: "No definitely the truth. The microwave was my best friend, and my brother he makes good fried eggs. When I was seen in the kitchen my family would call for a national holiday, or bring out the video camera! One time I was home alone, I made a fried egg and set the fire alarm off..."
Q: Really!?
A: "Yes, haha although I'm told that is hereditary. I'm not the first person to set of the fire alarm because of my cooking" She laughs for a moment before saying, "My dad often jokes around saying thats the dinner bell"

Q: So its not like you never cook, you just don't like to?
A: "Ya pretty much, but now cooking and I are getting along better"

Q: So prior to your little transformation, what could you cook?
A: "Mostly breakfast food, eggs, pancakes, I was the best pancake flipper ever! Toast, anything in the microwave, and pasta...." She pauses and thinks "yep thats about it"

Q: Now what can you cook?
A: "Ha, well i'm not a master chef yet but I've managed to get over my fear of cooking meat by starting with chicken. I season and pan fry it, its quick and easy to do which is nice cause my school day is soooooo looonnnngggg. I also can make a pretty great vegetable stir fry!"
Q: Anything else?
A: "Ahhh well" She laughs and looks a little embarassed "Nothing yet, I'm slowly working my way up to the cooking Olympic dishes like Creme Brulee, but right now we are still in training. Me and the thousands of recipes on Google.

Q: What inspired you to begin cooking?
A: "I was hungry I guess" Signe laughs and shrugs before continuing "Here in Austria the typically don't eat large meals in the evenings and I wasn't used to that. My host mom is home late so she can't cook for me, and I wasn't about to ask my 15 year old sister to make me dinner, so it was go hungry or man up and face the stove I guess"

Q: Where do you usually buy your ingrediants?
A: "Thats easy, my flat is literally on top of a Billa grocery store. All the cashier ladies know who I am haha. Its super nice cause if I forget something, all I have to do is walk downstairs!"

Q: What was the last meal you cooked?
A: "Tonights dinner. I pan fried a couple of chicken breasts. First I marinated them with lemon juice and thyme. My spice knowledge is low so I either throw something on that sounds familiar and hope for the best. I heated olive oil in a pan with some finely chopped onions, and then fried away. Before I made the chicken I made a simple guacamole. Avocado  onions, garlic, tomatoes, and lemon juice because we didn't have lime and Billa was closed. I let that sit in the fridge while I fried the chicken so it would get nice and tasty! As a nice side salad I chopped up some cucumbers and tomatoes and sautéed them with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Classic taste. I ate the guacamole on the chicken as a sort of sauce I guess. It was really good. My host sister loved it, said she had a foodgasm haha. I guess the reason I never cooked before is because I didn't really have to and I was always scared it wouldn't taste good! So I'm really glad she like it!"
Q: Sounds delicious! Well looks like we have time for only one more question!
A: "Ask away!"

Q: Now that you found that you enjoy cooking, do you think you will continue with it when you return to the U.S.?
A: She pauses for a moment and thinks, "Hmm I'm sure i'll continue cooking, but cooking for two brothers that eat about a chicken each is a lot different then frying a couple chicken breasts." She laughs and says "Maybe i'll make the appetizers!"
Q: Sounds good to me! Well thank you for your time, and I hope I'll get to taste a dish of yours in the future!
A: Your welcome! And yes, if I open a restaurant I'll be sure you to send you a ticket" She pauses and then laughs while saying "What am I thinking restaurants don't have tickets!"
Q: Haha I got what you meant! Well folks, its been great talking with Signe here on the foodnetwork, but we are out of time! Until next Tuesday folks!
